Play it Safe, 2020
Video Installation, 3:37
Made in response to the COVID crisis, the video, Play it Safe, was created from films that won an Oscar for Best Actress or Best Film, or were the highest-grossing of the year they were released. These clips, edited chronologically, create a new monologue exploring hope, hysteria, fear, and the public face of "femininity" in the United States. The video was projected on public buildings in various locations throughout Boston during April and May of that year.
A series of five limited edition prints, produced through a multi-layered printing process, compliments the film. The prints are created from stills that represent the five greatest outliers in the history of the Best Actress award: Halle Berry in Monster's Ball, Hilary Swank in Boy's Don't Cry, Charlize Theron in Monster, Jodi Foster in Silence of the Lambs, and Olivia Colman in The Favourite.
